This is a dyno sheet from the tuner I intend to go to for my truck. It is from a bone-stock truck like mine, on 87 gas. Dem gains mmmm...

Kinja'd!!!

One odd thing caught my eye though. 1 free internet to the first to spot it.

Virtual Dyno?

I don’t see it, maybe the virtual dyno thing? I don’t know anything about that product.

Pulls should both cross at 5252

If calling out the odd item, no and crowmolly got it.

If asking what it is, it’s using the weight of the vehicle instead of the weight of the dyno roller to determine the power. Apparently it’s pretty accurate.

Ask them about it. See if they have an explanation.

Is it the negligible gains in the usable rev range?

Wouldn’t be a bad idea.

was the virtual dyno tested on the street or actual dyno?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I think quality standardized infographics should be more common in consumer products, especially cars. Specific numbers allow statistics to be manipulated, for example peak torque, hp, mpg, mpg towing etc. If people saw some of these things, maybe they would make smarter decisions rather than going for the misleading numbers some cars put out.

Crowmolly got it.

Most gains are negligible unless you’re flat out. Most perceptable “gains” here would be from changing shift behaviour, throttle mapping, backing off torque management and so on rather than actual hp gains.

But I know what you’re saying. Still, for no actual hard parts being changed, that’s pretty good in my books.

Interesting, because there is an Innovative Tuning in Buffalo, NY that does awesome work. Makes me nervous about the place your looking at.

Virtual dyno is a street test. It’s the same principal of accelerating a known mass, just the mass is the vehicle itself instead of the dyno roller.

He’s apparently done testing himself back to back and come out with results that might be 1hp apart, so negligible difference. Probably better this way anyway, because it’s tested in real world conditions.

Kinja'd!!! Shmevans > Smallbear wants a modern Syclone, local Maple Leafs spammer

Fair enough. On a truck it would be nice to see that low-end torque bump up a bit. *coughsupercharger*

I’ve used both and the difference was pretty astounding in my case but I’ve heard people say it can be accurate.

What motor do you have? I remember how the 5.3's were very detuned from the factory and gained gobs of power from a simple tune.

Kinja'd!!!1

Good idea. Too many people just look at the peaks. I mean, it’s easy for me to look at this and go meh, 9hp and 5tq gains not good enough.

But if you actually look at it properly, it’s producing the same amount of power and torque as before but 200 and 600rpm lower down.

I’ve thought about this. I DD this thing, so for the moment all I want is the best compromise I can get without going too far from stock. I want to make this the all rounder it should have been rather than pumping as much power as possible out of it.

This truck is special to me on a different level than something seriously modded. Right now it just seems a waste to cut up a relatively rare truck when I could pick up a cheap one with a 4-banger and put an even bigger engine than mine in.

If it ever comes to that though... BlowerT56CamPortedEverything

I’ve dealt with both, and found the biggest single factor is wind resistance. Even a few mph headwind (or tail wind) can throw your results off quite a bit.

I think if people paid attention to this sort of stuff, there would be less 4-cylinder light duty and v6 full size trucks for people just trying to save a buck.

Interesting... didn’t think of that. I guess it depends where you do it. I found a nice road near me that’s smooth, dead straight often empty and across the prevailing winds with shelter. I’ve done 0-60 runs there, and even though it’s slightly uphill (emphasis on slightly) one way I find that when I do a pass in each direction they work out the same.

I never had one, just remember my brother who specializes in LSX tuning talk about it awhile back. I don't remember the gains he was talking about but it was pretty stout going from stock to tune.

I was going to say, best think you can do is multiple passes each way and average your results. I have a Navy chief who hopped up random vehicles (everything from a Geo Metro to a Suburban), more for MPG gains than power gains, and would write a blog about it. That was his testing methodology.

Oh! On the dyno it was 260 and vdyno was 280. And I made sure I put in the correct cars weight as well as my weight.

03/15/2016 at 19:02

Kinja'd!!!0

Did you weigh it or did you use the listed weight? The weight on this run seems high to me based on the numbers I’ve seen + 2 people, but the power figures seem dead on. Could yours have been lighter than you expected? Or could you have had a noticeable tailwind?

Either way I guess I should double check on a proper dyno after, but this is still a good indicator of improvement.
